North Carolina Problem Gambling Program Prevention Programs

The North Carolina Problem Gambling Program provides training, technical support and consultation services to organizations desiring to integrate youth problem gambling prevention education into current programs or integrate other types of prevention-focused work affecting youth and young adults.

Higher Education

  • The Sure Bet workshop series’ target audience consists of professionals and college and university faculty and staff. This workshop series provides a solid foundation for understanding problem gambling.
  • The Collegiate College Awareness and Prevention Program provide education and awareness sessions to college age students and emerging adults around gambling related harms, and responsible gambling. 
  • The program is designed to help any student make better informed choices, become aware of the impact on mental health, protect them from harm and increase their confidence levels on seeking help if facing problems with their gambling behavior or encouraging fellow students to seek help.
  • Each year, selected college and university programs engage student athletes, students, faculty, coaches, and staff with education, technical support and consultation on providing other educational and awareness activities on campus.

Youth Educators

  • Training on youth problematic behaviors in gambling, gaming and digital media use and a “train the instructor” on youth prevention education and youth mental health promotion curriculum is provided in tandem with a mine-grant to implement youth prevention education.

Clinicians and Healthcare Professionals

  • The Blurring the Lines of Gambling (BLOG) is a workshop series designed to provide training on the prevention and treatment for youth affected by problem gambling and gaming.
  • The Introduction to Prevention and Treatment for Youth Problem Gambling and Gaming is located at the Behavioral Health springboard and is a 5-module self-paced course open to anyone. This no cost online training provides a case for clinicians and healthcare professionals to integrate problem gambling and gaming screening, interventions, and treatment pathways into their practices.
  • The youth prevention coordinator for the NC Problem Gambling Program is available for virtual technical support and consultation calls to kick-start integration of problem gambling individual and environmental prevention strategies.

  • The North Carolina Problem Gambling Program provides mini-grants to middle schools, high schools and community organization to integrate youth prevention education in gambling, gaming and digital media overuse.

  • The North Carolina Problem Gambling Program staff engages with the National Council of Problem Gambling and affiliates to incorporate research, best practices and produces materials on trends in gambling.

  • March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM). This initiative is driven by the National Council on Problem Gambling. We encourage all partners to participate in PGAM to raise awareness of youth problem gambling.
  • A media kit has been developed and can be distributed upon request by the mid- February each year. This kit includes information to post on social media and in electronic newsletters.
